      • Dizziness
      • Fainting
      • Palpitations, and 
      • Swelling of the legs

Peripheral artery disease can cause pain or cramping in the legs during walking that improves with rest. Stroke can cause sudden weakness or numbness, particularly on one side of the body, difficulty speaking, confusion, or problems with vision or balance.

How Do Doctors Check Cardiovascular Health?

Evaluation usually begins with relatively simple measurements. Blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, weight, smoking status, family history, and lifestyle patterns can help estimate cardiovascular risk.

Depending on the person's symptoms and risk profile, doctors may use an electrocardiogram (ECG) to assess the heart's electrical activity, an echocardiogram to examine heart structure and pumping function, or exercise testing to evaluate the cardiovascular response to exertion.

How Can You Improve Cardiovascular Health?

Protecting the heart does not require one perfect diet or one intense workout. Cardiovascular health develops from repeated habits.

The CDC recommends that adults obtain at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, or 75–150 minutes of vigorous activity, together with muscle-strengthening activities on at least two days each week. Even smaller amounts of activity are better than none.

Walking, cycling, swimming, dancing, and other aerobic activities can all contribute to cardiovascular fitness.

Nutrition should focus on an overall healthy eating pattern rather than a single "heart-healthy" food. Eating more vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and other nutrient-dense foods while limiting excessive sodium, highly processed foods, and unhealthy fats can support cardiovascular health.
